Most leaders I have met don’t lack goals. They lack a path between the big goal and tomorrow. The method below is the one I use in coaching and the one I built Geo Executive Coach on.
1. The one-year goal, in one sentence
Write it so that an outsider could tell whether you reached it. “Be a better leader” isn’t a goal. “In a year my team runs without me for two weeks” is.
2. What must be true in 90 days
Split the year into four stages. For the first, ask yourself: what must be true in three months for me to be on track? Pick two or three things, not ten.
3. The 30-day plan
From the 90-day stage, choose what you will do in the next four weeks. Every step has a measure: a conversation held, a process documented, a decision made.
4. The 48-hour commitment
Every planning session ends with a single question: what will you actually do in the next 48 hours? A small step taken quickly matters more than a perfect plan postponed.
5. The weekly review
Once a week, fifteen minutes: what I did, what stopped me, what I change. This is where the D.O.P. principle from Humanversia comes in: discipline, organisation, perseverance. Goals don’t get cut when things get hard; they get reorganised.
Where a coach helps
The hard part isn’t writing the plan, it is coming back to it. That is why Geo Executive Coach asks, at every session, what happened to last time’s commitment. You can try it free for 7 days on your real goal.
