AI agents for executives: where they help and where they don’t yet

What an AI agent is, which executive tasks it genuinely saves time on, where it is still too early and how to start a first agent safely.

An AI assistant answers you. An AI agent acts: it receives a goal, chooses its steps, uses tools (email, calendar, documents, a CRM) and comes back with a result. The difference looks small, but it changes the management question: it is no longer “what do I ask it?” but “what do I let it do on its own?”.

Where they already help

  • Meeting preparation: gathering the relevant documents, writing a one-page summary and suggesting the questions worth asking.
  • Monitoring: following a set of sources (market, competitors, press) and sending you only what changed.
  • First drafts: reports, presentations, replies to recurring emails, which you then correct.
  • Repetitive work in clear processes: sorting, filling in forms, checks against written rules.

Where it is too early

  • Decisions about people: hiring, evaluations, dismissals. Judgment and responsibility stay with people here, and EU rules are strict.
  • Any irreversible action without review: payments, sending offers, signing documents.
  • Processes the team itself can’t describe clearly. An agent doesn’t fix a chaotic process; it makes it chaotic faster.

How to start

Pick a single task that eats your time every week, has an easy-to-check result and does no harm if it goes wrong the first time. Write down the steps a person would take. Let the agent prepare and a person approve. After a few weeks you will know exactly how much time you saved and where it makes mistakes.

The question for the board

Not “do we have AI agents?” but “which tasks have we delegated, who approves and how do we measure?”. If the team can answer those three, you are on the right track. In the AI projects we build for companies, this is exactly where we start.
