After 20 years in executive search, I can say it calmly: AI is changing how we search for leaders, but not why companies hire us. They hire us for judgment, discretion and network.
Where AI helps
- Market mapping: who works where, which companies have similar profiles, which career paths lead to the role. What used to take days now goes much faster.
- Preparation: the role profile, interview questions, the summary of a long CV.
- Organisation: tracking candidates, feedback and the steps of the process.
What stays human
- Assessment. A well-written CV doesn’t tell you how someone reacts under pressure, how they build a team or how they leave a company. You learn that from conversations, references and experience.
- Trust. A senior executive who isn’t actively looking doesn’t talk to an algorithm. They talk to a person they respect, who keeps things confidential.
- Cultural fit. A leader who thrives in one company can fail in another. That is sensed, checked and discussed honestly with both sides.
A simple rule
AI prepares, people decide. No algorithm should reject candidates on its own, and tools that claim to “assess” people from video or voice deserve a lot of scepticism. It is a matter of fairness, and for decisions about people EU rules are, rightly, strict.
What to ask an executive search partner
- How do you use AI and where do you stop?
- Who actually assesses the candidates?
- How do you protect the confidentiality of candidates and of the company?
